The Calumet: An American Place, Photographs by Gary Cialdella, is scheduled for release in January 2009. The book is co-published by the University of Illinois Press and the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University. A native of the Calumet region, Cialdella’s photographs are about the physical and social landscape of this industrial area, along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, that includes northwest Indiana and southern Cook County Illinois. The artist states that one of his goals is to make photographs that “evoke a sense of place.” Cialdella began this body of work in 1986, working over a twenty-year period to complete the series.
